The “chura” Tarija, located in southern Bolivia, hides a wine treasure that is unique in the world. Its valleys, blessed with a temperate climate and an altitude of over 1,800 meters above sea level, give rise to high-altitude wines with exceptional character and quality.

Traveling the Wine and Singani Route of Tarija is not just a tasting of beverages, it is an immersion in the “Chapaca culture”, its dreamlike landscapes, and the warmth of its people.

Why visit Tarija?

Beyond the wine experience, Tarija offers endless attractions that make it an unmissable destination:

Unique high-altitude wines

Tarija’s vineyards are among the highest in the world, a characteristic that directly influences the quality of the grapes. Intense daytime sunlight and cool nights promote slow ripening, concentrating aromas and flavors that result in wines of great complexity, freshness, and balanced acidity.

The charm of Singani

The route is not limited to wine. Singani, a distillate of Muscat of Alexandria grapes, is Bolivia’s national liquor and a cultural heritage. Visiting the wineries that produce it is an opportunity to learn about the process of making this drink, which has won international recognition and captivated experts such as film director Steven Soderbergh.

The warmth and festive spirit of the people of Tarija, known as “chapaco,” can be felt in every corner. The wine route is the perfect excuse to discover the local music, cuisine, and traditions.

When is the best time to visit?

The Tarija Wine Route can be enjoyed all year round, but each season has its own charm:
  • February and March: This is the harvest season, when the vineyards are at their best, laden with ripe grapes. Some wineries offer the experience of participating in the harvest and the traditional “grape treading.”

  • April to July: The vineyards are lush and full of life, a magnificent sight for photography lovers. The weather is pleasant and perfect for leisurely touring the wineries.
